In case you have not been following the news there is a virus going around that is affecting kids and teens. Non-polio enteroviruses are common viruses that primarily affect infants, children and teenagers. Symptoms are similar to those of the common cold. A particular form, known as enterovirus D68 is currently in the news as a contagious respiratory illness resulting in the hospitalization of children. Children with asthma are particularly at risk, although adults with compromised immune systems or asthma may also be at risk.

Additional information regarding enterovirus D68 can be found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website and on the Wisconsin Department of Health Services website.

As a reminder, standard precautions, especially hand washing and hand sanitizers, are required to reduce the spread of infection. Hand washing with soap and water for 20 seconds is recommended.
