How do you Partner with people to 'clear the path ahead'?
Building a relationship between a person participating in the IRIS program and the IRIS Consultant is critical to the success of this program. In order to clear the path ahead towards the goals of each person in the program, we first need to understand exactly what those goals are. We all know that it is far easier to tell someone about our hopes and dreams as well as our concerns when we feel safe and comfortable with them. It is always my intent to create a partnership first with each person through conversation and mutual respect in order to accomplish this.
What's your favorite thing about being an IRIS consultant?
As an IRIS Consultant, I absolutely love the opportunity to get to know so many different people, as well as being able to directly help people achieve the goals they set. It is incredibly rewarding.
What past experience prepared you to become an IRIS Consultant?
My past experiences are varied but their common threads are customer service and building relationships. As a music teacher, I was able to work with many different students, some with special needs, for 6 years. I built relationships with them, invested time with them and truly cared about each one as they grew and matured. However, a teacher's responsibility does not end with the student but rather extends to the parents as well. For some of the parents of children with special needs, it was their goal to see their child participate in a concert just like everyone else. With the help of classroom teachers, special education teachers and speech and language pathologists, we were very successful at accomplishing this goal each time. This experience prepared me for the position as IRIS Consultant as it taught me to use the resources around me to draw from the expertise of my colleagues to help accomplish goals, and to see each student as part of a family instead of singularly. As an Event Coordinator, my experience was more customer service based, but the success of that service was dependent on the relationships I nurtured with each client. I found that timely communication was key to keeping them content and happy. It was also important to make the clients feel safe to ask me any question no matter how silly they thought it might be, that I never made them feel that I was too busy for them, and to really listen to each one so that I had a secure understanding their vision for their event. As an IRIS Consultant, I have drawn from these experiences when communicating or interacting with people and when helping them set their goals. All people want to feel that you are invested and present in the moment as well as that they are truly being heard.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
In my free time I absolutely love playing volleyball. I am not great, but I try really hard. At home I love playing my piano when I find a minute or two. I also enjoy fishing, although I don't get to do that as often as I would like. The majority of my free time is taken up by my two dogs, Tesla and Harp, a black lab and dachshund. I love them to pieces and they make me laugh every single day!
