HOUSTON, June 19, 2024 – Molina Healthcare of Texas (“Molina”) announced that the Texas Department of State Health Services has appointed Dr. Lindsey Vasquez as a new member to the Texas Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee. Dr. Vasquez, a practicing OB-GYN, mother of four, and the director of maternal and women’s health for Molina Healthcare of Texas, is one of seven new committee members appointed and the only member from a managed care organization (MCO).

“It is an honor to be selected as a committee member to continue to champion birth equity in the state of Texas, as I have my entire career, and contribute to impactful changes that will ultimately improve maternal-child outcomes,” said Dr. Vasquez. “Approximately 50% of all births in Texas are covered by MCOs and the inclusion of a maternal managed care voice is a critical element to help solve for the disproportionate maternal health disparities that contribute to poor outcomes. Molina is committed to advancing maternal health equity not only for our members, but for birthing people across Texas.”

The Texas Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee is responsible for reviewing maternal mortality cases, identifying trends and risk factors, and providing recommendations to guide preventative measures and strategies to ensure the health and wellness of expecting mothers and their babies. The additional, new committee members are physicians specializing in various areas of medicine, urban and rural community members with relevant health care experience, and a representative of a managed care organization, which brings the total committee membership to 23.

“I am grateful these outstanding appointees have enthusiastically volunteered their time to help Texans understand the factors that contribute to maternal mortality and make recommendations to protect the lives and well-being of women,” stated Jennifer Shuford, MD, MPH, Texas Department of State Health Services commissioner in a release.
