Chlamydia Screening
What is chlamydia?
Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by bacteria. Sexual contact spreads STIs. The infection can affect people of all ages.
What are the symptoms of chlamydia?
- Painful urination
- Lower stomach pain
- Vaginal discharge
- Discharge from the penis
- Vaginal pain during sex
- Testicular pain during sex
Even if you do not have any of these symptoms, you can still have chlamydia.
Who should be screened for chlamydia?
- If you are pregnant, or think you may be pregnant
- If you are 25 years old or younger and have sex
- If you are over 25 years old and you:
- Have a new sex partner
- Have more than one sex partner
- Have sex with someone who has other sex partners
- Do not use a condom during sex and you, or your partner, has sex with other people
How often should you be screened?
You should get a chlamydia screening once a year.
Is there a way to treat chlamydia?
Yes. Antibiotics will treat chlamydia. If left untreated, chlamydia can cause serious health problems. It can prevent pregnancy. If you are already pregnant, chlamydia may affect your baby’s health.
Follow your provider’s instructions and take all your antibiotic medication as prescribed. See your provider if your symptoms do not go away.
How can chlamydia infections be prevented?
- Abstain from all types of sex to avoid chlamydia and other STIs
- Always use latex condoms correctly during sex
- Limit the number of sex partners
- Get a chlamydia screening if you change sex partners
